Graduation Requirements

Graduation planning should be based on the rules that apply to the student's cohort, prior credits, and individual academic history.

Individual graduation planning

Ontario secondary school graduation requirements can differ depending on when a student began Grade 9 and which transition rules apply. For that reason, the school reviews each student's academic record before confirming a graduation plan.

Important: Students should not rely on a generic checklist alone. The school will review the student's transcript and confirm the requirements that apply to that student.

Graduation planning may include

  • Review of previously earned credits
  • Compulsory and elective credit requirements
  • Literacy requirement status
  • Community involvement requirement status
  • Online learning requirement status, where applicable
  • Prerequisite planning for intended post-secondary programs

Transfer students

Students transferring from another school or another education system should provide complete academic records so that appropriate placement and graduation planning can be completed.
